After Dak's Deal, What's Next in Dallas Cowboys 2021 Offseason?

It's finally done. The Dallas Cowboys signed Dak Prescott to a four-year record-setting contract. For years, this was the Cowboys' number one priority. Now that it's all said and done, the front office can move on to what's next as they try to bounce back from a disappointing season in 2020.
So what's next? Here are the three main steps I believe are key to a successful Dallas Cowboys offseason.
1. Restructuring key players
After Prescott's new contract, the Dallas Cowboys are officially over the cap. But that's not as concerning as many would think it is. According to Over The Cap, the Cowboys are exceeding their cap space by $1.17 million.
That'll quickly change, though. And if the Cowboys don't wish to cut any of their current players, they won't have to. Restructuring is the name of the game when it comes to salary cap management and the front office has plenty of candidates. Using the projected cap savings available in the Over The Cap calculator, here's the cap space the Cowboys could open up by restructuring each of these players:
- DeMarcus Lawrence: $12.75M
- Amari Cooper: $15M
- Zack Martin: $8.25M
- La'el Collins: $6.41M
If you blinked, maybe you missed it but we're at $38M in cap room with these hypothetical moves! We can get all the way to $52M by adding Tyron Smith and Ezekiel Elliott to the list. Restructuring Blake Jarwin and Anthony Brown will open up over two million each.
Restructuring deals allows NFL teams to open up cap space today while sacrificing tomorrow's cap space. But the Dallas Cowboys are in a position to do some moves in free agency if they wish to.
2. Re-signing the "other" pending Cowboys free agents
Re-signing Dak Prescott was the team's number one priority but with his deal done, it's time to focus on other key pending free agents. Fortunately for the Cowboys, this seems like a pretty easy task. Since they've paid most of their star players, there aren't any high-profile free agents in the Cowboys' 2021 free agency class.
Yet the Cowboys will be making a lot of big decisions soon. Is Sean Lee coming back for one more year? What about Andy Dalton? Will Aldon Smith try to pursue a bigger contract elsewhere?
The answers are clear for a few players like C.J. Goodwin for special teams purposes and Antwaun Woods since he's a restricted free agent.
Then there are Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis did little to solidify themselves as long-term answers at cornerback, bringing one back should be the goal. Otherwise, the Cowboys will have close to zero depth at the position.
Xavier Woods might also be on the front office's to-do list. Not to mention Linebacker Joe Thomas, who played on 37% of the team's defensive snaps. Prescott was by far the priority, but the Cowboys have a lot of work left to do before free agency kicks off next week.
3. Get a safety in free agency
The Dallas Cowboys are most certainly not the NFC favorite to reach the Super Bowl. But they're not a team in rebuild mode. They're a team that's close. With Dak Prescott, Tyron Smith, and La'el Collins back, this offense should pick up right where it left off in Week 5 of the 2020 season.
The front office needs to understand this and know it's time to go for a big-time free agent at a position the team needs to upgrade. This year, several quality safeties will hit free agency, including Anthony Harris and Marcus Williams. If the Cowboys manage to land one of these top free agents for Dan Quinn's defense, fans might be able to dream bigger goals for this team in 2021.
Of course, the NFL Draft is also on the horizon. But as of right now, these feel like the biggest three steps that are next in the Dallas Cowboys offseason. Meanwhile, Cowboys Nation can be happy about Dak Prescott sticking around.
