The Dallas Cowboys have been preparing more than ever after last week's rough game.
One player who will not be able to prepare is left tackle Tyron Smith, who will be missing his second-straight game.
Throughout Smith's career, he's missed a total of 28 games with numerous injuries to his back, neck, and knees.
This season has been an ankle injury that he tweaked against the Vikings two weeks ago.
The Cowboys will be without him on Sunday to protect Dak Prescott's blindside.
Here are a few ways they can game plan around his absence.
TE/RB to help on the left side in pass pro
The news came out to Twitter that Terrence Steele will be the starting LT on Sunday.
This has raised some concerns due to two factors:
- In 2017, Prescott was sacked six times in a 27-7 loss to the Falcons due to poor play from former LT Chaz Green.
- Steele allowed 11 total pressure in last week's loss to the Denver Broncos.
Those two reasons alone will be for the coaching staff to add help with a tight end on passing downs.
This will not only help Steele but the offense to get back to the success they were having during their six-game win streak.
Mike McCarthy has said Steele looked a lot more comfortable and confident at LT than he did a week ago.
As long as Kellen Moore and staff can use Dalton Schultz and Ezekiel Elliott to help in pass protection, the offense can continue with its creativity.
Screens and QB rollout plays
The best way to have your quarterback by more time on passing downs is to call rollout plays.
Prescott is one of the best QB's throwing on the move and should utilize plays for him to do so.
You do not want to him doing seven-step drop backs, instead have designed screens and quick outs.
These types of plays allow Dak to quickly get rid of the ball and Steele to receive better help.
Atlanta's defense is not great, but Dallas does not want to take them lightly, as they did in Denver.
McCarthy and Moore realized the lack of preparation from last week and aim to be more focused even with the recent injuries.
Having Tyron in the lineup would be helpful for Sunday's matchup, but next-man-up is the name of the game in the NFL.
