The season opener for the Dallas Mavericks was not the performance the team wanted to put on display.
It was very tough to watch as the Mavericks could not score offensively and it seemed as if every attempt the Atlanta Hawks shot up was going in.
Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis struggled in all four quarters shooting the ball as they finished with 18 and 14 respectively.
As the Mavericks get ready for their game two matchup, let's dive in to what they need to improve on to win games.
Luka needs to be more efficient on offense
As mentioned, Luka struggled scoring as he finished with 18 points on 6-17 from the field which is not going to get it done.
Yes it was the first game of the season but you do not want to see this performance continue or become a trend.
Dallas right now with first year head coach Jason Kidd and not much star-level talent, Doncic will have to be the one leading the charge.
Until the Mavs are able to have more consistent play from other players, Luka will have to be superstar we know he is night in and out.
Better play from the Centers
For about a decade, the Mavericks have struggled to get consistent play from the center position.
Last game proved yet again they do not have a force near the basket who teams will have to account each game.
Dwight Powell has been a solid piece during his time in Dallas but he will never be the dominant force you can consistently rely on.
Willie Cauley-Stein is good on the defensive end with his rebounding, but that is all he will give you.
If the Mavericks will want to take some attention off of Luka, they will need their post players to have a bigger impact.
More production from the bench
The only contribution the Mavericks got from their role players were guard Jalen Brunson.
Brunson finished second in scoring with 17 points and three assist off the bench.
While he continues to show his abilities, the rest of the backups did not do as well limiting the offense.
Great thing is the Mavericks have 81 more games to improve their offensive and defensive play.
Hopefully Kidd and the staff can put together a game plan that can allow the players to be at their best.
They are looking for the improvement to happen sooner than later.
