Dallas Cowboys "getting more calls" about pick #10

With the 2021 NFL Draft less than 10 days away, it's smokescreen season in the NFL. This means rumors about anything draft-related should be taken with a grain – or two – of salt. That includes what you hear from NFL executives themselves. And that definitely includes what you hear from the Dallas Cowboys' VP Stephen Jones on 105.3 The Fan. However, Jones's comments about pick #10 were definitely interesting.

In a recent interview for the radio station, Jones offered a hint or two about the Cowboys' mindset in the first round. First, he talked about how a strong quarterback class helps Dallas out at #10 and the possibility of five quarterbacks being drafted in the Top 10.

Unless Jones is hiding something, the one insight we can take away from the quote above is that the Dallas Cowboys might not be considering drafting an offensive tackle at pick #10. Of course, it will be hard for top prospects Penei Sewell and Rashawn Slater to fall to said pick, but this being a deep offensive tackle draft class, it could certainly happen.

Other than that, it shouldn't be surprising to listen to the word "defensively" from Stephen Jones when discussing their first-round draft pick. The Cowboys are coming off one of the worst defensive seasons in franchise history and did little to address that during free agency.

Things could change if the Dallas Cowboys decide to trade down, though. According to Stephen Jones, the front office is already fielding calls for pick #10.

Trading down from the Top 10 could be ideal for the Cowboys if a quarterback is still on the board when they're finally on the clock. Teams in need of a quarterback tend to overpay to draft their signal-caller of the future and if the right one is available, the Cowboys might end up in the middle of a bidding war between various teams like the Patriots and the Bears.

In his most recent mock draft, ESPN's Mel Kiper had the Dallas Cowboys moving down from #10 to #15 in exchange for the Patriots' 2022 first-round pick. Getting an additional first-rounder would be huge for the Cowboys' future.

Now, granted, if Dallas decides to move down the draft order, they might miss on the best cornerbacks like Patrick Surtain II and Jaycee Horn, who make up for "Tier 1" in this CB class.

The 2021 NFL Draft is set to kick off on April 29th and as the date gets closer and closer, we'll have you covered here at A to Z Sports Dallas.
