Dak Prescott signed a big-money deal with the Dallas Cowboys back in March. That contract is already looking like a great value for the Cowboys after another quarterback received even bigger money. With that, the Cowboys have their most important player locked in for the foreseeable future.
That said, the Cowboys still have other contracts that they need to figure out. We have seen this front office pay some positions — running back (Ezekiel Elliott) and linebacker (Jaylon Smith) — but pass on paying others — cornerback (Byron Jones). Dallas has two upcoming free agents that are looking for new deals.
First is wide receiver Michael Gallup. Gallup has exceeded every expectation that was set for him when the Cowboys drafted the Colorado State product in the third-round of the 2018 draft. Gallup has blossomed into a key piece of the Cowboys offense.
The other is defensive end Randy Gregory. Gregory has had an up-and-down career to his point, mostly due to off-the-field circumstances. However, there is no denying his talent. It looks like many concerns that people have had about Gregory are in the rearview mirror. He is set up for a strong 2021 season.
COWBOYS TO WAIT TO EXTEND ANYBODY UNTIL AFTER SEASON
It has been reported that the Dallas Cowboys will wait until after the 2021 season to extend any other player, including Gallup and Gregory. This does not come as a huge surprise, but it is still noteworthy nonetheless.
It makes sense for the Cowboys to want to wait. For one, the Cowboys are pretty talented at the wide receiver position. Dallas likely does not want to invest so much money in just one position.
As for Gregory, we have yet to see the talented pass rusher to produce for a full season. Perhaps that happens this season, but the Cowboys have every right to want to see it happen first.
Dallas already passed on Leighton Vander Esch's fifth-year option. Meaning the Cowboys will have very difficult decisions to make next offseason in terms of how they want to spend their money.
Right now though, the focus is 100-percent on the upcoming season.
