With pick #238 in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have selected offensive guard Matt Farniok from Nebraska. A two-time captain for the Huskers, Farniok will provide depth to the Cowboys' interior offensive line.
Recently, the team made it clear they're expecting sophomore Tyler Biadasz to be the starter at center. However, Connor Williams and Biadasz still have to prove they're the starters at their respective positions.
Per Michael Gehlken from the Dallas Morning News, Farniok would be more comfortable playing inside than outside.
Even though Farniok would feel better about playing inside because that's what he's done recently, he should provide some position flex if the Cowboys ask him to. After all, he started 24 games at right tackle between 2018 and 2019.
Farniok's strengths extend beyond the playing field. He was named a captain by his teammates two times in Nebraska.
The Athletic's Dane Brugler had a "Priority Free Agent" grade on Farniok, pointing toward his mirroring skills as a considerable weakness. However, his quickness can help him at times.
"Overall, Farniok plays with desired functional quickness and competitive drive, but his balance/recovery issues leave a small margin for error, both at tackle and guard" – Dane Brugler
With this pick, the Dallas Cowboys add their second offensive lineman in the NFL Draft. Heading into Day 3, it was clear the Cowboys wanted to look for depth both at tackle and at guard. By adding Josh Ball at tackle earlier in Day 3, they addressed both needs.
Farniok was the 11th player the Cowboys drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft and only the third offensive player. The team made an effort to focus on defense, starting the Draft with six straight defensive players.
Judging by the Cowboys' picks, one focus was to get prospects with good physical traits and impressive length, drafting several players with great wingspan measurements. Hopefully, for Dallas, Dan Quinn translates that length to quality play on Sundays when he tries to turn one of the worst defenses in franchise history around.
Below is the final 2021 Dallas Cowboys Draft class.
