On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys officially inked safety Malik Hooker to a one-year deal. The move was the worst-kept secret since the Cowboys arrived in Oxnard for training camp. Jerry Jones all but confirmed the signing would happen earlier in the week.

Hooker is a strong addition to the Cowboys secondary that is looking to add as much talent as it can get. Aside from Donovan Wilson, there has not been a ton to be excited about regarding safety play in Dallas.

Keanu Neal has struggled thus far in camp, albeit his role will be with the linebackers. Damontae Kazee is practicing, but he is still coming off a season-ending Achilles injury. Bottom line: the Cowboys desperately needed help in the secondary.

The signing of Hooker has the potential to improve the Cowboys' defensive backfield in a big way. When healthy, the former first-round draft pick excels at playing the ball in the air and making big plays. That said, injuries have followed Hooker since he entered the league in 2017.

Our own Mauricio Rodriguez outlined why the addition of Malik Hooker is big for the Dallas Cowboys defense:

The Dallas Cowboys hope to get the healthy version of Malik Hooker if they sign him over the next few days. And make no mistake about it, they need his help.

For Malik Hooker, it’s all about remaining healthy. He’s very good in coverage and a playmaker. There’s no better evidence for this than his 2018 season, in which he played 14 games and finished the year as one of the best-graded safeties in the league.

Dallas signed former New York Jets cornerback Kyron Brown on Sunday. The Cowboys placed offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt on injured reserve to open up a roster spot in order to ink Hooker to a deal.
