The Dallas Cowboys will open the 2021 regular season in just a few short weeks. That feels awesome to write, as it has been a lengthy offseason without actual football to really talk about.

Dallas still has two more preseason games to play before turning its attention to September 9. The Cowboys are set to take on the Houston Texans on Saturday in what will be a tune-up game, so to speak.

Mike McCarthy told the media on Friday that the starting defense will play the majority of the first half. That will mean we will get to see a preview of what Dan Quinn's unit will look like with key contributors on the field.

As for the offense, things will be different. The starters, (likely) sans Dak Prescott, will only play a series or two against the Texans on Saturday. We won't get to see a ton, which isn't too surprising with Prescott not expected to suit up.

Anyways, here are some notes and observations from Friday's open practice ahead of preseason game number three.

  • DAK STILL NOT PRACTICING WITH COWBOYS

Dak Prescott has been limited in practice for the last couple of weeks, and that was again the case on Friday. The Cowboys' quarterback is dealing with some soreness in his shoulder, and it is obvious that the coaching staff doesn't want him to push anything.

Prescott was not out on the field at the beginning of practice, but he did run out later. He was talking to his teammates, was around the other quarterbacks, and appeared to be in engaged with everything going on; yet, he did not throw any passes and spent much of the time speaking individually with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

It would be nice to see Prescott throwing more passes and participating in game-like action; however, that does not appear to be the plan at the moment.

  • CEDRICK WILSON IMPRESSED

The Dallas Cowboys did not have a regular practice on Friday — it was a walkthrough for the upcoming game against the Texans. Meaning, players weren't going all-out and the coaches were preparing the team for Houston.

That said, Cedrick Wilson made some impressive plays in practice. Wilson had a really nice grab between two defenders and was sure-handed on multiple passes from Gilbert Gilbert.

Wilson has definitely locked-in his spot on the 53.

  • DINUCCI BATTLING RUSH FOR QB3

Another quick note from practice on Friday is that Ben Dinucci and Cooper Rush are definitely battling for that third quarterback spot. This isn't any breaking news or anything, but it was interesting to see the two work with the third-string offense during the open practice.

It remains to be seen if the Cowboys will carry three passers or not. DiNucci and Rush must show the coaches something during the last two preseason games to make it worth keeping more than just Prescott and Garrett Gilbert on the roster.

Dallas will take on Houston at 7 pm on Saturday evening inside AT&T Stadium
