According to a report from NBC Sports, the Carolina Panthers attempted to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson last year.
Watson, however, refused to waive his no-trade clause for the deal.
(Terms of the potential deal are unclear.)
Carolina was willing to trade for Watson despite his civil/criminal cases not being settled yet.
From NBC Sports:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, multiple teams are indeed willing to make the deal, as long as the criminal situation is resolved. Last year, the Dolphins insisted on settlement of all cases before a trade would be finalized. The Panthers were willing to make the deal regardless of the civil (or criminal) cases, but Watson didn’t want to waive his no-trade clause for a trade to Carolina.
It's unclear when the Panthers contracted the Texans about a potential deal. Carolina eventually traded a 2021 sixth-round pick and 2022 second-round and fourth-round picks to the New York Jets for Sam Darnold. That move hasn't panned out so far and there's a chance that Carolina will look to add another quarterback this offseason.
That quarterback, however, won't be Watson, since he clearly doesn't want to play in Charlotte.
