The Tennessee Titans drafted a high-upside quarterback in Malik Willis in the 2022 NFL Draft (third round), but that doesn't mean there's going to be a quarterback controversy in Nashville this summer.
Ryan Tannehill is entrenched as the Titans' starter. And while we don't know what his future holds, we at least know he'll be the guy for Tennessee in 2022.
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger, a former linebacker who played in the NFL for over a decade, believes there's still a way the Titans can use Willis in certain situations this upcoming season.
"They (Tennessee) like to move the ball on the ground," said Baldinger. "[They were] one of three teams in the league last year that ran it more than they threw it. And so to me, Malik Willis, I don't think he's going to challenge Ryan Tannehill in training camp this year. But I do believe there should be a package for Malik Willis, using his considerable skills to be able to run the ball."
"And he's not just a runner — he's got the big arm, he's got the cannon. Have a package for Malik Willis where he can get on the field, make the defense defend him, make them defend all 11. Get him on the field, get him some reps and still help move the ball down the field for the Titans. I would expect the Titans to have a package like that and I'm anxious to see if it comes to fruition."
I'm not sure this is the best idea. The Titans are hoping that Willis will be a long-term answer at quarterback. I'm not sure throwing him into the fire as a rookie — even just in certain situations — is wise.
The best thing for Willis right now is to develop behind Tannehill. I don't think Willis is at a point where a "special package" is going to be beneficial for the Titans' offense. If anything, it could be harmful.
Tennessee doesn't need to rush anything with Willis. They just need to let him develop at his own pace. The former Liberty quarterback has plenty of upside, but he's also still a very raw player. There's no need to force his development this early in his career.
