Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Josh Malone, a fourth-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017, is hoping to make the Tennessee Titans' 53-man roster in 2022.
Malone, however, has an uphill battle to climb.
The former Vol has impressed during minicamp according to various reports, but that doesn't mean he'll have a roster spot this fall.
In fact, ESPN Titans reporter Turron Davenport recently made a 53-man roster prediction for Tennessee and he doesn't see Malone as one of the six wide receivers that the Titans will keep.
Davenport has the Titans keeping Robert Woods, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Treylon Burks, Dez Fitzpatrick, Racey McMath, and Kyle Phillips.
This means Fitzpatrick and McMath would essentially make the roster over Malone.
The receiver position has its share of questions. Woods made a remarkable return to the field for voluntary OTAs after tearing his left ACL in November. He'll be the veteran leader of a fairly inexperienced group. Burks has had a rocky start to his career because of complications associated with asthma. Westbrook-Ikhine is pretty much a lock to make the roster because of his versatility and special teams contributions. The rest of the spots are up for grabs. Fitzpatrick and McMath will compete with free-agent addition Josh Malone for a roster spot while Phillips figures to be in a battle with Mason Kinsey for the primary slot receiver role.
It can be a crapshoot when it comes to those final roster spots. Malone is a journeyman wide receiver who has had trouble sticking on an NFL roster. The good minicamp reviews are encouraging, but if he wants to make the Titans' 53-man roster, he'll need to have an outstanding training camp and really show out in preseason games.
