The Cincinnati Bengals hoped to get Kendric Pryor on the practice squad after waiving him on Tuesday. But the undrafted rookie put together a strong enough preseason to catch the attention of at least one NFL team in waivers.
The Jacksonville Jaguars – who were #1 in the waiver wire order – claimed Pryor on Wednesday morning. The rookie out of Wisconsin had a strong summer that put him in the discussion to be on the 53-man roster of the Bengals.
However, the math in Cincinnati's WR room didn't allow that to happen. The Bengals have depth players that provide a lot of value on special teams, something valued by Zac Taylor's coaching staff.
The Bengals decided to gamble with Pryor and lost. Such is life in the NFL. Last Sunday, I wrote about the case for Pryor to make the team:
"The UDFA has shown very good route running and hand skills that are likely to translate to Sundays. On a team where most of the depth at WR is based on special teams value, a legit weapon like Pryor justifies a place with the team."
The Jaguars picked up a player with a ton of upside and hopefully Pryor is given the chance to compete for a significant role over there.
Having said that, the Bengals added some talent themselves by claiming three players on Wednesday's waiver wire. The most notable of which is former third-round pick tight end Devin Asiasi.
After adding O.J. Howard to be Hayden Hurst's backup, Asiasi could be an important player for Cincinnati as Drew Sample recovers from injury.
The Bengals also added guard Max Scharping and defensive tackle Jay Tufele.
