Immediately after watching Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow walk off the field after losing to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI, my first thought was "he's in his second year, he'll be back in the Super Bowl again".
I imagine a lot of folks shared that sentiment.
But history suggests that Burrow actually won't return to the Super Bowl.
According to a stat discovered by CBS Sports, the last 16 quarterbacks to lose in their Super Bowl debut didn't make it back to the Super Bowl (or haven't yet).
That's a mind-blowing stat. But I think it shows us just how hard it is to reach a Super Bowl. Even with all the parity in the NFL, it's still incredibly difficult to reach the sport's grandest stage.
So much has to go right. The team has to have a good regular season, players have to stay healthy, the playoff draw has to be just right. It's a tall mountain to climb (just ask Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers — he won his first Super Bowl start and he still hasn't returned).
I like Burrow a lot. I think he's going to be the closest thing we've seen to Tom Brady. He has a competitive edge that's on the same level as Brady's. But there's no guarantee he'll ever play again in February (not counting the Pro Bowl, of course).
Then again, Burrow could be the one to break this trend. I wouldn't bet against it. Either way, it's going to be a lot of fun watching him battle some of the other great quarterbacks in the AFC for the next 10 plus years.
