The Tennessee Titans will enter the 2022 NFL Draft without any major pressing needs.
Sure, there are some areas where Tennessee could use some additions (wide receiver and guard for example), but the Titans have a Super Bowl-caliber roster regardless of what happens in the draft next month.
NFL.com's Chad Reuter thinks that Tennessee's lack of major needs could make for a wild first round for the Titans.
Reuter's latest mock draft has five quarterbacks being selected in the top 14.
And Reuter has the Titans getting in on the quarterback action by trading up to No. 14 to select North Carolina's Sam Howell.
The three interceptions that Ryan Tannehill threw in Tennessee's Divisional Round loss to Cincinnati have to be a constant thorn in the minds of Titans coaches. It won't, therefore, be a surprise if they give up a 2023 first-round pick to grab the team's next starter. Howell has the arm to move the ball vertically as well as the toughness and improvisation skills to move the chains on a regular basis.
I don't hate the idea of the Titans taking a quarterback in the first round. Ryan Tannehill turns 34 this summer and the team can move on from him after next season and save $27 million in cap space (via a post-June 1, 2023 release). It would make some sense for the Titans to take a swing at a young quarterback.
But I don't think trading up to land Howell would be a wise idea. Howell has some nice upside — he has a good arm and he can pick up yards with his legs — but in a quarterback-loaded draft, he'd likely be a second-round pick.
If Howell falls to the Titans at No. 26, then I could see how it's logical to take a shot. But trading up for a quarterback that's far from a sure thing? That's not something I see Titans general manager Jon Robinson considering.
