Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson made it clear on Monday afternoon that he's not satisfied with the six selections he currently has in the 2019 NFL Draft.
During a pre-draft press conference, Robinson told reporters he'd prefer to have more picks.
Of course, this shouldn't come as a surprise. What NFL general manger wouldn't love to have more picks in the draft? Draft weekend is essentially Christmas for NFL front offices, so it's not shocking that Robinson wants more opportunities to hit on some talented players.
Think of it this way — if Robinson lands a stud player and then hits on two more players who end up being solid contributors for the team, the draft will be mostly viewed as a success.
The more picks Robinson and the Titans have, the better the chances are that one of those mid to late round selections turns out to be a player who can have a major impact on the franchise.
But just because Robinson wants more picks, doesn't necessarily mean a trade is inevitable.
When Robinson was asked about potentially moving back, or moving up, he told reporters that Tennessee's draft day plans are still "to be determined".
This also shouldn't be a surprise. Robinson is very calculated in his moves. He's not going to make a trade that doesn't make sense just for the sake of adding a few picks.
We've seen in the past that if Robinson sees a player he likes, he won't hesitate to trade up.
Last year, Robinson traded up in consecutive rounds to land Rashaan Evans in the first and Harold Landry in the second. The Titans sacrificed some draft picks to make those moves, but that shows Robinson is willing to give up draft capital to secure talented players who can help the franchise.
The bottom line is this — even Jon Robinson has no clue what will transpire in the 2019 NFL Draft. The draft process is fluid and things can change at a moment's notice.
Robinson, however, won't get caught up in the moment. He never does. The former Patriots scout will be a poised and focused figure in the Titans' war room.
And that focus will help the Titans emerge from the draft as a better team than they were before.
