Tennessee Vols QB Hendon Hooker won’t be in New York on Saturday night for the Heisman Trophy presentation.
That’s because Hooker, despite his numbers warranting it, wasn’t voted as one of the top four Heisman finalists. The Greensboro, NC native came in fifth in the voting.
Before the ceremony, a couple of players that were finalists instead of Hooker — Ohio State QB CJ Stroud and Georgia QB Stetson Bennett — were asked about the Tennessee QB.
“I don’t think it’s fair to Hendon. He’s a great player,” said Bennett when asked about being a finalist over Hooker. “I don’t think it should be spoke of in that light. I think he should be getting respect for the year that he had and not what could have been but what was. He almost not singlehandedly but was a main factor in that program changing course, you know? That’s always silly to me.”
“As far as me getting hate for it, it doesn’t bother me really. I didn’t make that call,” added Bennett.
Stroud also spoke highly of Hooker.
“I was a big fan of Hendon’s and I still am,” said Stroud. “I know he’ll do great things in his career. Wishing him a great recovery process. He was definitely an amazing player and he definitely has a right to be up here with us.”
Bennett and Stroud shouldn’t have to field questions about Hooker. They were voted as finalists and they deserve to be able to enjoy the experience.
But at the same time, Hooker should be there, too. He was more than deserving and it’s a shame he won’t be recognized on the Heisman stage.
