Former Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith should've been an early-round draft selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
But because of health concerns — Smith dealt with blood clots in his lungs while at Tennessee — he fell to the sixth round, where he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Smith had been given a clean bill of health before the draft, but that apparently wasn't enough to ease the concern of NFL teams.
That was their loss, though.
Smith turned out to be the best value in the draft.
The former Vol ended up playing more snaps than any other rookie guard in the NFL in 2021.
Not bad for the eighth guard selected in the draft (and the 42nd offensive lineman).
Sixth-round picks aren't locks to make a team's 53-man roster. They certainly aren't expected to play more snaps than any other rookie at their position.
Smith, however, should've never been a sixth-round pick. He was viewed as a first-round talent when he was on the field for the Volunteers. Nothing that he's doing in the NFL is a surprise to fans who watched him play at Tennessee.
The Chiefs didn't have a first-round pick in 2021 due to a trade. Smith, though, has turned out to be as valuable as any player they could have selected in the first round.
