The Tennessee Vols are currently the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.

It's an impressive accomplishment for a team that just two years ago looked like it was on the brink of another 10 years in the wilderness.

Josh Heupel, however, has managed to turn the program around faster than anyone could've imagined.

But Heupel understands that Tennessee has a long way to go. This team told everyone during the offseason that they had big goals this season. When opposing fan bases laughed at them, they stayed the course.

Now that they're in a position to make the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, you might think the Vols would be offering up a collective "I told you so".

But that's not how this team operates. They hear the outside noise. Heupel has made sure to address it, embrace it, and enjoy it. But the Vols are more interested in getting back to work. They know they're only halfway to their goal.

And that's why Heupel said on Vol Calls on Wednesday night that he doesn't remember who was No. 1 at this time last year (by the way, it was Georgia and that worked out pretty well I'd say).

Heupel pointed out that he's proud of his players, but there's still a lot of work to do.

This Tennessee team can win a national championship. But if they get caught up in being ranked No. 1 in early November, they'll blow their chance to win it all.

Fortunately for the Vols, this team appears to be as focused as any team in the nation.
