South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer has his team at 6-3 entering a tough final three weeks of the season.
South Carolina takes on Florida on the road this weekend before hosting Tennessee on November 19 and then finishing the season on the road against Clemson.
Those three teams have something in common — they all use the color orange to some extent (none more than the Vols, of course).
On Wednesday, Beamer was asked how he feels about orange and he gave a fun answer while referencing former Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer (Beamer was a graduate assistant at Tennessee under Fulmer from 2001 to 2003).
"As a color that I wear, I'm not against it by any stretch of the imagination," said Beamer. "My alma mater was maroon and orange, it's their colors at Virginia Tech. But certainly, we are going to be seeing a lot of it. So I'm not a fan of orange this month for sure."
"But 365 days a year, I won't say I don't wear it," added Beamer. "I think I've got a pair of tennis shoes with some orange trim in them that I wear from time to time."
Beamer was also asked if the next three weeks are an opportunity to make a statement in November.
"We're going to be seeing a whole lot of orange the next three weeks," said Beamer. "It's absolutely an opportunity. There's the old saying, 'they remember November'. That's been something that's been said since I got into coaching. Coach Fulmer at Tennessee used to say that all the time to the teams when I was a graduate assistant there."
I know the feelings on Beamer have been mixed since he took over at South Carolina. And he's certainly had some less-than-ideal sound bites. But I liked this answer from him. It was nice to see a coach not resort to trashing a color just because a rival wears it. Chances are that most coaches have sported almost every color possible at some point in their career, which makes those comments come off as silly.
Beamer's doing a nice job at South Carolina so far. It's been overlooked because of the incredible success Josh Heupel is having at Tennessee this season, but Beamer definitely has the Gamecocks moving in a better direction than his predecessor, Will Muschamp, did.
