2023 four-star linebacker Karmelo Overton recently named his top 10 schools and the Tennessee Vols made the cut, along with Arkansas, Arizona State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Jackson State, UCF, Georgia Tech, South Alabama, and Memphis.
Overton, 6-foot/200 lbs from Ozark, AL (Carroll), is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 21 linebacker in the country and the No. 17 player in the state of Alabama.
The Alabama native broke down his top schools with Rivals.com this week and he gave two interesting non-football reasons that he's interested in the Vols.
Overton likes Tennessee because of the landscape of the state and the program's unique school colors.
"The state is beautiful; I want to go check them out," said Overton. "You can’t beat the colors. That is one of the schools I want to keep building with the coaches on a better relationship.”
This is a player the Vols need to key in on over the next few months. Of the programs on Overton's list, Tennessee is arguably the "biggest name". These are the types of recruiting battles the Vols have to win to get back to back to 9 or 10 win seasons.
Overton is projected by 247Sports to be a Power-5 starter.
Here's the scouting report on Overton from 247Sports national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna:
Appears to have above average key and diagnose ability. Flashes some instincts and read / react ability on tape. Possesses adequate play speed, flashing some range to play sideline to sideline. Moves efficiently, plays with very little wasted motion. Shows the ability to bang between the tackles and play in space. Strong at the point of attack, will strike you. Demonstrates above average play strength, showing the ability to stack and shed blocks consistently. Limited sample size as a defender in pass coverage and as a blitzer. Plays with some feel to his game, more of a throwback player.
Tennessee needs to add as much defense as possible. And it sounds like Overton could be a "captain of the defense" type player, making him a perfect fit for the Vols.
