The Tennessee Vols are currently in the midst of a recruiting investigation — stemming from violations that occurred under previous head coach Jeremy Pruitt — that could end up costing the program a bowl game appearance in 2021.
It's unclear when the investigation will be wrapped up. It's also unclear when penalties against Tennessee's football program will be announced (UT will likely self-impose some penalties with the hope of appeasing the NCAA).
The expectation is that Tennessee will not play in a bowl game in 2021, due to the violations.
But until a bowl ban is official, a bowl game appearance is still in play for the Vols.
And that's why Tennessee continues to be included in bowl game projection from national media outlets.

The latest bowl game projection from College Football News has the Volunteers staying close to home.
College Football News has Tennessee playing Northwestern in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.
Tennessee last appeared in the Music City Bowl in 2016 when Josh Dobbs led the Volunteers to a 38 to 24 win over Nebraska.
The previous season, UT played Northwestern in the Outback Bowl in Tampa. The Vols won that matchup 45-6.
