An Alabama Crimson Tide football player entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday and the Tennessee Vols should immediately be on the phone trying to bring him to Knoxville.
Former four-star safety Kaine Williams, a Louisiana native who was rated as the No. 11 safety in the 2021 recruiting class, has entered the transfer portal according to On3's Matt Zenitz.
Williams played sparingly in 2021 for Alabama, appearing only on special teams.
Of course, receiving only special teams snaps as a true freshman at Alabama isn't unusual — there's a lot of talent on the Crimson Tide's roster.
Williams is likely looking for a quicker path to the field. If that's the case, then Tennessee would be perfect for him. The Vols are thin in the secondary and could absolutely use another defensive back.
The only problem is that the deadline for SEC intraconference transfers has already passed (February 1). That means Williams would either have to sit out a year or get a waiver to play immediately. We've seen numerous players have success with SEC waivers in recent years, but it can be a cumbersome process that drags into the season.
Tennessee, however, should still do what it can to land Williams. If he plays in 2022 then great. But if not, then they'll still have a talented player they can count on starting in 2023.
