The Tennessee Vols are one of several programs hoping to land a commitment from 2023 four-star defensive lineman Keldric Faulk.
Faulk, 6-foot-5/240 lbs from Highland Home, AL, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 14 defensive lineman in the nation and the No. 11 player in the state of Alabama.
The talented recruit took an unofficial visit to Tennessee this past weekend as he works to determine which school will get his final official visit. The Vols are battling Michigan, Miami, and Ole Miss for that final visit.
Faulk spoke to VolQuest after his visit to UT and he explained why Tennessee has a legitimate shot to land his commitment.
The Vols are one of the only programs that want Faulk to play at defensive end instead of outside linebacker.
"They want me to play defensive end," said Faulk. "Other schools, they play outside linebackers who drop down and cover sometimes. Tennessee sees me as a hand in the dirt defensive end and that’s something I like to play. I feel free in that spot and it's way more comfortable for me anyway.”
There are obviously a lot of factors that go into a recruit's decision. Relationships, NIL deals, the feel of the town, etc. It's easy to focus on those things, but let's not forget that the game played on the field is an important factor, too. If a player doesn't feel like he fits into a program's scheme, then relationships and NIL deals (things that can be found elsewhere) won't mean much.
Josh Heupel and his staff are proving to be elite recruiters. And one big reason is because they aren't casting a ridiculously wide net in recruiting. They're identifying players that would be a good fit at Tennessee and quickly making those players a priority.
The Vols currently have the No. 8 ranked 2023 recruiting class in the nation. If they continue to recruit at a high level, they'll have a good shot at finishing with a top five recruiting class.
