Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh was asked on Saturday about where he wants to see UT's offense improve this spring.

Golesh, unlike a lot of coaches, eschewed the cliché response of "we just want to get better in every area" in favor of a more detailed answer.

The second-year Vols offensive coordinator wants to better protect quarterback Hendon Hooker while also running Hooker more.

This might not seem like a big deal, but Vol fans should love this answer.

Obviously, protecting the quarterback is always going to be essential to a team's success.

But having a quarterback who can pick up yards with his legs — whether it's by design or it's a quarterback improvising — can be the difference in a game.

Hooker was productive on the ground in 2022, rushing for 620 yards and five touchdowns. Most of those yards, however, were out of necessity when a play broke down.

It sounds like Golesh and Josh Heupel are planning on using more designed runs for Hooker.

If the Vols can improve the quarterback run game in 2022, it's going to be bad news for the rest of the SEC. Tennessee already had one of the most explosive offenses in the nation without using a lot of designed quarterback runs. Adding that element could make Tennessee's offense nearly unstoppable.

The sky could truly be the limit for the Vols' offense in 2022 if Hooker becomes a more dangerous threat in the run game.
