The Tennessee Vols may have found their next Jauan Jennings this weekend.
Jennings was a fan favorite at Tennessee for five seasons. The Tennessee native had numerous memorable moments for the Vols, including his juggling touchdown catch in the Vols' win against Florida in 2016 and his hail mary touchdown catch to beat Georgia the same season.
Jennings was the heart and soul of Tennessee's football team during his time on Rocky Top. He left a void that was impossible to fill. His deep love for the Volunteers, which stems from being an in-state player, was evident every time he was on the field. It felt like he literally willed Tennessee to wins at times.
Fortunately for the Vols, it looks like they may have found another Jennings-like player in three-star wide receiver Nate Spillman.
Spillman, a Franklin, TN native, committed to Tennessee on Sunday.
And his high school coach's description of him sounds a lot like Jauan Jennings.
Along with being long, athletic and tough, he has good ball skills and is a very good route runner. To me, that’s not the headline though. The headline is that he’s one of the toughest guys on the team. He’s a leader on this team. He’s probably the hardest worker on the team and does everything to help you win.
You’re looking for guys who not only will help increase your talent, but who also help you develop a better winning culture. He’s done that for us and he will do that for Tennessee.
Elite toughness, a winner, a team leader. That sounds a lot like Jennings.
No one will ever put on a Tennessee uniform and be Jauan Jennings. He was a one-of-one type player. But it sounds like Nate Spillman could end up being a very similar player.
I'm sure the Vols are certainly hoping he will be.
