It's been less than a week since Alex Golesh resigned as the Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator to become the new head coach at South Florida, but UT is already feeling the effects of losing the popular assistant coach.
2024 four-star athlete Mazeo Bennett decommitted from Tennessee on Thursday.
The Greenville, SC native organically committed to the Vols on October 16, a day after Tennessee's wild 52-49 win against Alabama.
One of the reasons Bennett decommitted is because of the departure of Golesh.
Bennett told On3 after he decommitted that he wants to see the Vols' offense without Golesh.
“With the loss of the offensive coordinator, I want to see Tennessee still function at that high level,” said Bennett to On3.
“Once this happened, some questions need to be answered about the program going forward for me and my family to stay committed,” added Bennett.
Tennessee is still one of Bennett's top schools, but his recruitment will be "100 percent open" moving forward.
The Vols' offense shouldn't change at all with Golesh gone. He was an important part of the coaching staff, and he had plenty of input in the offense, but this is ultimately Josh Heupel's offense. And that won't change regardless of who is hired to replace Golesh.
Tennessee has plenty of time to get Bennett back in the committed column.
And if they don't, it shouldn't be a major concern. He's a good player, but the Vols will have no shortage of talented athletes wanting to come to Knoxville after a memorable 2022 season.
