Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel channeled his inner Johnny Majors on Thursday during his final media availability before UT travels to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend.

Heupel was asked by a reporter if he took a moment to reflect after Tennessee was revealed this week as the No. 1 team in the initial College Football Playoff rankings.

Tennessee's second-year head coach made it clear that he's proud of his team, but the ranking doesn't mean a lot to him right now — simply because the final rankings are the only ones Heupel cares about.

And he sounded a little like Majors during his response.

"For us, moved right back into it as soon as I was done with the show," said Heupel. "I’m absolutely proud of what we’ve done up until this point, from the time we’ve gotten here until now. There’s a lot of things that we need to continue to get better at, but the reality is that’s the first show, the first rankings. Everybody remembers what you do in November. The only one that matters is the last one."

“The reason we’ve gotten to the point where this is a big football game is because we’ve handled things the right way," added Heupel. "Coaches and players alike. Preparation and practice and understanding the type of football team (we’re playing). This is a really good football team and they’ve (Georgia) been winning for a while."

They remember what you do in November.

Majors was right when he said that phrase over 30 years ago. And Heupel is correct now.

Most Tennessee fans didn't come into the season expecting this team to compete for a national championship. But that's the situation right now and the Vols can get one step closer to that goal by beating Georgia, the defending national champs, on Saturday.

What a time to be a Tennessee fan.
