The Tennessee Vols are set to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this week in a Super Regional matchup in Knoxville.
Tennessee's best of three series against Notre Dame will start on Friday with the first game slated to begin at 6:00 PM ET (ESPN 2). The winner of the series will advance to the College World Series.
The Vols have been the best team in college baseball all season long. There are even some folks — opposing fans and media analysts — who have suggested that Tennessee could be the best college baseball team of all time. For that to be true, though, the Vols will have to be the last team standing in Omaha later this month.
Notre Dame baseball coach Link Jarrett spoke to reporters this week and not only does he think Tennessee was the best college baseball team in the nation this year, he thinks they were the best No. 1 team in all of college sports.
That's a monstrous compliment from Notre Dame's head coach. We saw some great teams in college sports this past year. Georgia's football team was fantastic all season long, minus their slipup against Alabama in the SEC Championship game. Kansas was impressive on their run to an NCAA Championship. And South Carolina's women's basketball team spent the entire season ranked No. 1 before beating UConn to win the NCAA Tournament.
It's the Tennessee baseball team, though, that Jarrett thinks has been the best across collegiate sports this year.
The Vols still have a lot of work to do to. And while I'm sure they appreciated the sentiment from Jarrett, having the Notre Dame head coach call Tennessee the best team in college sports is far from the Vols' end goal.
