Tennessee Vols quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle met with reporters in Miami on Wednesday and he offered an important injury update that could impact UT's game plan against Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
Halzle told reporters that true freshman quarterback Tayven Jackson is "feeling like his old self".
Jackson injured his collarbone on October 22 in Tennessee's win against UT Martin.
"He looks like his old self again," said Halzle when asked about Jackson. "It's been good watching him out there, running around, throwing the ball again. With it being the collarbone like it was, it's just he was out for a little bit and now there's not really been a setback on his way back. He looks good out there on the field."
It's unclear if Jackson will be a full go against Clemson, but Halzle's comments are certainly encouraging.
This is extremely important when it comes to the Vols' game plan for the Orange Bowl.
The only scenario where Tennessee wants to see Jackson play against Clemson is if the Vols are winning the game in blowout fashion. Otherwise, if Jackson comes into the game, it means that Joe Milton has likely suffered an injury.
And that's why it's important that Jackson could be available.
If Jackson doesn't play, it'll mean that walk-on Gaston Moore will be Tennessee's backup quarterback. If that's the case, then it could impact how the game is called by UT's coaches. Tennessee probably won't want to risk Milton getting hurt on designed runs if the backup quarterback is a walk-on. But if Jackson is a full go, it could allow Tennessee to be less cautious with how they use Milton.
