The Kansas City Chiefs are eager to use the new weapon they acquired before the trade deadline on Tuesday, but first, he must learn the playbook.
We have all heard about the Chiefs' playbook and just how hard the offensive side of it can be to learn. Well, it could be quicker for Toney than others, as he already knows a bit of the terminology from a familiar face in the Chiefs organization.
The New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was once the quarterbacks' coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, so the terminology used could be very similar.
"Yeah I see a few correlations, but there's a lot of differences too," Toney said on Wednesday. "I just feel like I have to go in and attack it like I usually do."
We have seen players come in here and it takes a while to learn the offense. It happened to Josh Gordon, too. This offense is very precise and specific, and knowing the terminology would help me learn it quickly.
"You will see him out there catching balls in practice, but let me just kind of see where we are at first," Reid said. "We've got a couple of plays in for him here and there, but I haven't even had the chance to be out on the field with him.
"Let's see where we go with that, and then go from there. He seems like a great kid and he's anxious. He wants to go and he knows I'm kind of holding back because I want to see what's going on."
Reid sounds very excited to see what Toney can do for the Chiefs. It sounds like both are ready to just let go, and have at it with this offense. In fact, there is a chance he could play this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
"Right now, I don't really have any expectations," Toney said when asked if he was expecting to play on Sunday Night Football against Tennessee. "I just want to come in and do what is asked of me. Whatever play, whatever assignment I have to do, I'm just going to do it my hardest."
I think Toney will fit in fine, and I don't think it will take him long either. And it sounds like he could be learning the offense quicker than people expected.
