Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy discussed Dak Prescott's interceptions on Tuesday and made a comment that reflected the quarterback's overall view on the recent turnovers.
In short, the Cowboys offense is preaching an aggressive approach. And that's not going to change in spite of the fact that Prescott leads the NFL in interception rate.
McCarthy actually made it a point that he doesn't want his quarterback to back down.
"Dak Prescott played at an extremely high level, go watch the tape," the Cowboys head coach told reporters earlier this week, stating that stats didn't tell the whole story.
"Most importantly, most importantly, he needs to keep firing," he emphatically added. "So let's make that clear. Because we're not slowing down."
Although he was talking to the media, it almost felt as if the coach was talking to his own player. Why does the coach who just saw a walk-off pick-six keep his team from beating the Jacksonville Jaguars have that confidence in his quarterback?
It's simple, really.
The Cowboys are getting high-caliber play from Dak.
Not all interceptions are equal. That much should be clear in the NFL.
The Cowboys offense is pushing the ball downfield and allowing receivers to play a big role in the passing game by having them run plenty of choice routes. Those are harder plays to make but it means many interceptions thrown by Dak Prescott are not his fault in the first place.
Earlier in the season, I made a deep dive into one particular route that had caused the Cowboys some complications. Whether it's poor reads or dropped passes like Noah Brown's in overtime, receivers (and pass protection, by the way) have also played a role in the quarterback's interceptions.
Following the heartbreaking loss to the Jaguars, Prescott talked about finding the balance between being aggressive and trusting his receivers, and avoiding forcing mistakes like his first interception.
Don't get me wrong. This isn't to say that Dak isn't making errant decisions and throws. As dumb as it sounds, he's playing at a very high level but it feels like he's making one to two bad decisions a game. Limit those and you're getting one of the best in the league right now.
John Owning from PFF did a great job finding the perfect numbers to prove Prescott is playing very good football right now noting that he remains Top 10 in the league in accuracy.
That's exactly the reason why Cowboys Nation should be excited about McCarthy's plea to Prescott. Keep firing. That's your best shot at winning in the playoffs.
Don't let frustration over a tough loss fool you. That game wasn't on Dak. And the guy is not playing badly at all. In fact, he's been playing very well.
