When the Dallas Cowboys drafted cornerback Kelvin Joseph 44th overall in 2021 it was expected that his impact would be immediate. Unfortunately, a grain injury derailed his progress, although he got some valuable reps at the tail end of the season.
Joseph is now in a position to benefit from an injury. With cornerback Anthony Brown out for the season with a torn Achilles, Joseph is set to take his place as a starter, and hopefully show why he was worthy of a second-round pick. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned on 105.3 The Fan on Friday that some changes have to change for Joseph for that to come true.
“It’s time for him to become a man…He’s gotta say it's time now," Jones said. "He should accept a higher level of responsibility. He’s got more people depending on him. It's time for some of the side stuff to ease its way out of his life.”
Talk about being put on notice.
Joseph hasn't been shy about his love for music and even does rapping in his spare time, going by the name Bossman Fat. While there's nothing wrong with having hobbies, Joseph is a high draft pick in the NFL and that comes with a lot of responsibility, so things like rapping have to fade in the background at some point.
Professional athletes need to be cautious of the company they keep away from the field. Earlier this year, Joseph was named a person of interest in a murder investigation that seemed from an altercation involving people he was associated with. This isn't to say Joseph has done anything terrible, especially since he was cleared of any wrongdoing, but it's about not putting himself in those situations.
Joseph has the perfect opportunity now to show why he was thought to be the CB2 of the future in Dallas. The talent is there for Joseph, he's just lacked the reps, especially this season with the rise of rookie Daron Bland.
A positive sign this season has been Joseph's work on special teams, which shows he's willing to contribute in any way. However, the Cowboys drafted Joseph to lock down opposing wide receivers, not cover kicks, so it's time for him to step up.
