The Dallas Cowboys made a few attempts at the trade deadline to bolster their wide receiver room with Jerry Jeudy and Brandin Cooks. Another veteran, one who is very familiar with the Cowboys, is firmly in the mix as well.
The man that runs the show in Big D, owner Jerry Jones, is someone with great admiration for free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, who he saw battle his Cowboys for years as a member of the New York Giants.
Forever the salesman, Jones dropped a bomb on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday.
“Odell is someone that we have all the appreciation in the world for what he is as a competitor," Jones said. "I know the Cowboys star on that helmet when he puts it on could look pretty good.”
Fire extinguisher, anyone?
Odell was signed by the Los Angeles Rams last November. The former two-time second-team All-Pro made his biggest impact on the biggest stage, the Super Bowl. Beckham was arguably the best player on the field, catching a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and then a 35-yarder in the second. Unfortunately, Beckham suffered a torn ACL before halftime and didn't return.
Of course, if the Cowboys were to go the Beckham route, several factors would have to be weighed, which Jones discussed.
"We should be aware that he's coming off this injury, but he showed he can do it, and do it well last year," Jones said. "So that would go in the mix real good. His past dealing with adversity of injury rehab, I think that tells you a lot. …
"I think a veteran player, such as Odell, my experience has been when we've brought a veteran player in, they hit the ground running in terms of being able to compete. That usually is not a big factor when we think about whether or not a player can fit. Now, the player's individual skills, his people skills as well as his past experience in terms of the systems that he's been in, if (a player) has been with several teams. All of those weigh in on it. I think that you're looking at a player that his experience far outweighs any of that ambiguity involved with how he's going to fit your system."
Only time will tell if the Cowboys acquire their former division rival, but it'll certainly be entertaining to watch.
