The Las Vegas Raiders' quarterback situation is a bit of a tough one to figure out.
They just recently extended Derek Carr. This season hasn't gone quite the way they planned on offense, though.
They've been a run-heavy team with Josh Jacobs, and he's been the star of the show. That comes after they paid up for star wide receiver Davante Adams and extended tight end Darren Waller.
So, of course, speculation starts about their quarterback of the future.
Will it be Derek Carr? Can he get them where they want to go or should they attempt to pivot sooner than later? Only time will tell.
Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus believes that Carr could get traded this off-season to an NFC foe.
His deal sends Carr to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a Tom Brady replacement.
It would cost the Raiders just over $5.5 million in dead cap. The Bucs would be on the hook for Carr for three more seasons.
The Raiders would get back a first and third round pick in 2023 in return for their QB.
Spielberger broke down why the deal would make sense for both teams.
It seems unlikely that the Raiders would trade for Carr’s good friend in wide receiver Davante Adams and then immediately move on, but anything can happen with head coach Josh McDaniels at the helm. While the team has spoken about the steep learning curve of the McDaniels offense, and despite injuries to tight end Darren Waller and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, Carr has not been good enough.
For Tampa Bay, we’re of course operating under the assumption that Tom Brady will either step away from the game altogether or perhaps push to play elsewhere (San Francisco?). Tampa has a tough road ahead in figuring out their salary cap situation but is too talented to just let Kyle Trask step in as the starter.
Carr would be the best quarterback in the NFC South as opposed to third place at best in the AFC West, and the Buccaneers can make a few more runs in a weak NFC conference before more fully turning over this roster.
For Las Vegas, many Raiders may rejoice while some others may get nervous once again. They would be without a starting caliber QB, and their draft pick situation for 2023 may not land them one of the top rookies.
The Raiders will have plenty of decisions to make this off-season.
Carr's future with the team will be at the top of the list.
