The home of the Dallas Cowboys is getting a makeover.
America's Team has called AT&T Stadium home since the 2009 season. As is the case with any sports facility, upgrades are made. However, the Cowboys are planning $295 million worth of renovations soon, the most extensive in the stadium's history.
Jones will present the request at the NFL's league meetings in Irving next week.
Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal was the first to report the renovation plans. According to him, the upgrades won't “radically alter the general look and feel” of the stadium but will "refresh premium spaces ahead of some key lease renewals and upgrade technology and other back-of-the-house services ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup."
16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host the World Cup that year, with AT&T being one of the venues.
"The timing is not unexpected," Fischer said. "While still one of the NFL’s leading venues by reputation, stadium best practices have evolved rapidly alongside changing consumer demands, and other, newer venues — namely SoFi Stadium near L.A. — have claimed the cutting-edge mantle since 2009. AT&T has only hosted a single Super Bowl, in 2011, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to ensure the stadium remains competitive for Super Bowls and other major events, such as the NCAA Final Four and WrestleMania."
Fischer went on to say that the Cowboys will look for assistance in paying for the renovations by asking the league for approval to withhold their normal contributions to shared gate revenue which is common when it comes to stadium upgrades.
As is always the case, Jones is making sure the home of the Cowboys is among the elite in sports.
