The Chicago Bears are adding a reinforcement at a major position of concern for Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Following Friday’s practice, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus announced that OL Alex Leatherwood will be elevated from the non-football injury list to the team’s active 53-man roster.
Chicago claimed Leatherwood after the Las Vegas Raiders made final cuts at the end of training camp. The former first-rounder out of Alabama will add depth to a banged-up offensive line along with the ability to play right guard and right tackle.
The coaching staff hasn’t had a ton of time with Leatherwood yet, but Eberflus said he is hard at work, preparing for whatever opportunity might come his way.
“Work in progress,” said Eberflus when asked about Leatherwood’s readiness. “He’s working diligently at it with the coaches and we think he’s in a good spot.”
Leatherwood will be making his team debut with the Bears after spending his rookie season with the Las Vegas Raiders. He started in each of the team’s 17 games in 2021, but his performance didn’t line up with his draft slot.
A fresh start could benefit Leatherwood on a team desperate for stability in the trenches. He will likely be assuming the role of next man up if something is to happen to one of the team’s starters on game day.
