The Pittsburgh Steelers joined the rest of the NFL in Tuesday's roster trim down to 80 players and there was one cut that was quite the surprise.

The Steelers decided to part ways with veteran linebacker Genard Avery, who was holding down the team's OLB3 position during the preseason. The defense is very limited when it comes to depth options at that position, so it's clear Avery must have failed to meet expectations to the point where he couldn't make it to next week's final round of cuts.

However, Avery played pretty well in the most recent preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. So it's currently unclear why the Steelers decided to move on.

The team announced the move via its Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

The team also released receiver Christian Blake, running back Mataeo Durant, quarterback Chris Oladokun and kicker Nick Sciba.

Derrek Tuszka looks like he'll take over Avery's spot. The Steelers could also add a veteran to the mix in-between now and after next Tuesday's final round of cuts.
