Decision time is here for the Dallas Cowboys. It's a decision they have known they would need to make, but if they want to avoid the same problems as last year, they need to make it.
Their starting left guard. No more rotations. No more snap counts. The Cowboys must make their decision. And it needs to be soon.
This week, they'll face the statistically worst pass rush defense in the NFL. The LA Rams, featuring Aaron Donald and Bobby Wagner.
At the moment, the starting left guard is Connor McGovern who returned from a high-ankle sprain on Sunday. Even then, he gave way to Jason Peters, and even an extension of Matt Farniok (with Zack Martin out a few plays).
To this point, both McGovern and Peters have played a shockingly similar number of snaps so far. Enough to make a fair comparison.
McGovern – 53 total plays. Three pressures and one sack allowed on 23 pass blocking snaps.
Peters – 37 total plays. One pressure and zero sacks allowed on 19 pass block snaps.
With the Dallas Cowboys running the ball better behind Peters than McGovern.
The truth is, the Cowboys coaching staff are not likely to make any change until they need to. However, if they continue to rotate between McGovern and Peters without making a decision, it will put the offensive line under the same issue as last season.
Inconsistent play, while also trying to stay on everyone's good side. In a vacuum, Peters is playing as the better player, despite being over a decade older. Displaying more power and comfort at the position.
Over the next three games, the Dallas Cowboys will play the likes of Aaron Donald, Javon Hargraves, Jordan Davis, Fletcher Cox and Alim McNeill.
There is also the possibility of the return of Dak Prescott sometime between Sunday and two weeks from now. To better keep off these powerful defensive tackles and keep Dak protected, making the smart decision of keeping Peters in the starting lineup needs to happen now.
Not just part of the time. The whole time.
