The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading for a linebacker ahead of Tuesday's 53-man roster deadline. They're sending the Denver Broncos late draft-pick compensation in return for linebacker Malik Reed.
Per 9NEWS, the Steelers are swapping a 6th-rounder for a 7th-round pick in addition to getting Reed. In other words, they're paying close to nothing to get the linebacker.
Reed has played 45 games and started 34 over his three-year career in the NFL for Denver. Over the last two seasons, he's recorded 13 sacks and 25 quarterback hits, per Pro Football Reference. Pittsburgh is getting a legit productive player.
Steelers' defensive coordinator confirmed on Tuesday morning that they see Reed as an outside linebacker. Reed will step in and be an immediate backup / rotational player behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.
As for the financials, the Steelers' new LB is set to earn $2.4 million for 2022 after signing a restricted free agent tender this offseason.
Overall, this is a very solid move from GM Omar Khan and the front office. The Steelers had no one behind the starting edge rushers and were in desperate need of some depth.
As of this writing, Reed is part of a roster with 57 players including himself.
