All of the talk lately around Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is interceptions. Regardless of if they are his fault or not, interceptions go down as a quarterback statistic.
In the last three games, Dak has throw five of his nine interceptions on the year. Even though the Cowboys have left each game with a win.
However, in the grand overall scheme of things, throwing interceptions really isn't as big of a deal. In fact, Since Dak's return from injury, he is playing at or above the best quarter backs in the game.
Since Week 7
- Dak Prescott (6-1): 71.2% completion, 1,713 yards 14 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
- Josh Allen (5-2): 60.3% completion, 1,373 yards 9 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
- Patrick Mahomes (6-1): 65.7% completion, 2,424 yards 16 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
- Joe Burrow (6-1): 69.6% completion, 2,079 yards, 15 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
- Justin Herbert (3-4): 68.8% completion, 1,990 yards 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
- Jalen Hurts (6-1): 68.9% completion, 1,643 yards 16 touchdowns and 1 interception.
- Tua Tagovailoa (5-2): 62.9% completion, 1,969 yards 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Dak playing at the same level as these other start quarterbacks. The Cowboys quarterback's game is amplified by the brand he plays for but is often at the same level as players who play the same position.
While he has shown struggles, his overall throwing and play-making abilities are as good as ever. Even with the amount of interceptions that have occurred.
In fact, recent history suggest it hasn't been a real factor in who wins the Super Bowl.
Of the last four Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, interceptions didn't affect the outcome.
2021: Matthew Stafford threw a league-high 17 interceptions.
2020: Tom Brady threw the sixth-most interceptions with 12.
2019: Patrick Mahomes only threw 5 interceptions but missed two games.
2018: Brady (again) threw 11 interceptions, 15th in the league that year.
Truthfully, the quarterback's who often don't throw a lot of interceptions are usually bridge QBs, or mid-level starters who don't take chances down the field. The case for many of Dak's turnovers this year.
An area that has been criticized of him, the Dallas Cowboys signal caller is taking more chances 10+ yards beyond the line of scrimmage, rather than being a 'checkdown QB' that many "analysts" believe him to be.
Even if Dak makes 2-4 bad throws per game, his number show he will throw the majority of them on target and catchable. Especially on game-winning drives.
Interceptions are an area he is able to clean up, but the good news is that trends are on his side that he and the Cowboys can and will overcome them.
