The Green Bay Packers (5-8) square off with the LA Rams (4-9) tonight with the playoffs and elimination on the line.

Much of the talk this past weekend in Green Bay is the potential return of rookie WR Romeo Doubs. The Packers leading receiver before being sidelined with an ankle injury. Teaming up with the suddenly hot Christian Watson, in time for a playoff push.

It seems the receiving core is only getting stronger. Not just by addition, but through subtraction as well.

Now confirmed, the Green Bay Packers are releasing nine-year veteran WR Sammy Watkins ahead of their Monday night game.

The release doesn't come as much of a surprise. With the rise in Watson, return of Doubs and QB Aaron Rodgers' favor in slot Randall Cobb, Watkins has become disposable.

Watkins only played in seven games due to suffering an ankle injury which landed him on injured reserve from weeks 3-6. He was hardly a factor when healthy.

In his short time with the Packers, Watkins only caught 13 passes for 206 yards and no scores. All career lows.

The Green Bay Packers will only incur $350,000 in dead money with Watkins' release and move forward with their best starting trio of wide receivers. Rookie Watson and Allen Lazard outside with a rotation of Doubs, and Cobb in the slot. Just in time to take on a weakened Rams secondary.

Watkins won't have to be exposed to the waiver wire and can sign with any team he chooses that's available to him.
