Pro Football Focus NFL insider Steve Palazzolo said on Thursday during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan that he thinks Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph could "absolutely" find a new home before the start of the season.
Rudolph battled for the starting quarterback job during training camp. And while Mike Tomlin hasn't officially announced a starter yet, the expectation is that offseason free agent addition Mitch Trubisky or rookie Kenny Pickett will win the job.
It's been trending this way for the former Oklahoma State standout. There's no doubt that Rudolph is too good to be relegated to third on the depth chart for a team. I don't know if he's capable of being an every-week starter in the NFL, but he's certainly better than a lot of the other backup options in the NFL.
Oddly enough, an ideal destination for Rudolph could be the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns won't have Deshaun Watson for the first 11 weeks of the season. For now, it looks like they're going to roll with Jacoby Brissett as their starter.
Brissett is 14-23 in his career as a starter, so it's not like he should be the unquestioned starter in Cleveland. Rudolph may not for sure be a better option, but there's a chance he could be. And the Browns would probably like to have him in case Brissett falters.
Of course, there's the question of whether or not the Steelers would actually trade Rudolph to the Browns. The two teams have made trades before, but a trade involving a quarterback seems unlikely.
We'll see how this plays out in the coming days/weeks, but it sounds like Rudolph's days in Pittsburgh are numbered.
