The Pittsburgh Steelers catch a huge break this weekend as T.J. Watt finally returns to the playing field. Without him, the team's pass rush productivity plummeted to become one of the worst units in the NFL.
Having him back changes the question for opposing offensive lines as Watt demands pass protection units' full attention which in turn opens up more one-on-situations in the trenches.
Despite Watt's return though, the Steelers were slapped in the face with some bad news on Saturday.
Star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has been ruled out due to appendicitis, reported NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
That's a major blow to the Steelers defense. Earlier this week, Damonte Kazee's activation was said to be a huge deal because it opened up the possibility for the Steelers to start using three-safety sets on defense. That was expected to open up play-making opportunities for Fitzpatrick.
Without the superstar safety though, things change.
Earlier this week, Pittsburgh's defense was expected to have three fresh faces in the lineup. Watt, Fitzpatrick, and recent addition William Jackson. However, the veteran cornerback has been placed on Injured Reserve with a back injury. That knocks him out for four games at least.
