Bears general manger Ryan Poles is leaving the door open for a potential trade involving second-year offensive lineman Tevin Jenkins.
When asked whether or not Jenkins should worry about a possible trade Poles declined to give a direct answer. Instead, he responded by complimenting Jenkins’ work at the guard position.
"We have a good five with him at guard," said Poles who insinuated Jenkins will start at right guard to open the season. "It’s good for us to have Teven at guard right now.”
Though Jenkins was drafted with the belief that he could become the franchise’s answer at left tackle, the Oklahoma State product fell short of expectations in his rookie season. He underwent a back surgery ahead of the 2021 season, playing in just six games with two starts.
Jenkins has looked comfortable at right guard throughout the preseason. The Bears have been “blown away” with fifth-round pick Braxton Jones’ performance at left tackle, which is the primary reason why Jenkins has been kicked to the inside.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Bears have fielded calls on Jenkins. However, Poles seems interested in Jenkins’ potential at right guard.
Every man has his price, and with the Bears in the midst of a rebuild it’s Poles’ duty to explore every possible avenue to improve the roster.
That being said, it’s likely in Chicago’s best interest to hold on to Jenkins, at least until the team can figure out what the newly signed OL Alex Leatherwood can bring to the table.
