The Pittsburgh Steelers' second round of roster cuts featured a big surprise on the defensive side of the ball. Outside linebacker Genard Avery is being let go on Tuesday's deadline for NFL teams to get to 80 players.

Although not the most talented of players on the Steelers, Avery's experience had many of us thinking of him as a virtual roster spot, however, Pittsburgh is not only moving on from the veteran but also doing so in just the second round of cuts.

Whether the surprising move is due to health reasons or some creative roster shenanigans (as Steeler Depot speculated on Twitter) remains to be seen. Personally, I believe the most likely explanation for his early release is all about giving him the opportunity to make another roster around the league.

Anyways, this leaves the Steelers' outside linebacker room very thin. There's T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith as your quite good starting duo. After them? Who knows.

Two big winners out of this are Hamilcar Rashed and Delontae Scott, who are now in a significantly better position to make the 53-man roster.

And yet, that's far from comforting. The Steelers must know one of their top priorities right now is to sign a veteran free agent to this position. There's no way you head into the season with only Watt and Highsmith as your proven players.
