The Pittsburgh Steelers have an exciting young pool of talent at wide receiver and an up-and-coming runner in Najee Harris. However, when it comes to what fuels the Steelers as a team, it's their pass rush, plain and simple.
It's no secret who leads the charge regarding the Steelers getting after the quarterback. Edge rusher T.J. Watt is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year thanks to leading the NFL with 22.5 sacks, tying the record for one season. Defensive tackle Cam Heyward is coming off of a 10-sack campaign and his third first-team All-Pro selection.
When Pro Football Focus talked about the biggest strength of the Steelers, Watt and Heyward lead the way.
Ben Linsey on what Watt and Heyward bring to the table:
"It's hard to find many better duos along the defensive front than T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward. Over the past three seasons, both Watt and Heyward rank among the top three players at their respective positions in both quarterback pressures and run stops. Their ability to make impact plays regardless of the situation is at the center of Pittsburgh's defensive success over that three-year stretch."
Watt and Heyward have been causing nightmares for offensive lines for even longer than three seasons. The Steelers have led the NFL in sacks for five consecutive seasons, and it's no surprise that it began the year Watt was drafted which coincided with Heyward's first All-Pro nod.
Watt has racked up 72 sacks over that span and Heyward has 43 with the former tallying four double-digit campaigns and the latter registering two.
The Steelers added veteran linebacker Myles Jack and re-signed All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. All of those guys are expected to play big roles for the Steelers in 2022. However, if Watt and Heyward aren't their usual dominant selves, then their jobs won't be all sunshine and roses.
