Trevon Diggs was drafted to be the top cornerback for the Cowboys in 2020. After a rocky start due to shaky play and a broken foot that cost him 4 games, Diggs intercepted three passes in the final five games.

Diggs followed it up with 11 interceptions in 2021, tying a franchise record (fourth-most in a single season). He's not only the top cornerback for the Cowboys but one of the best in the NFL, that shouldn't be debated at this point.

Diggs still has things to work on to get better, and he wants the result of his grind to be that he reigns supreme over all defensive backs.

“I want to be the best DB out,” said Diggs. “Period.”

Despite earning first-team All-Pro honors last season, Diggs still has a lot of doubters. A large contingent sees him as a player that takes too many chances, especially after allowing nearly 1,000 yards in coverage last season, the most in the NFL.

One respected NFL analyst, Bucky Brooks, agrees with the boom-or-bust label that seems to follow Diggs. Brooks named listed that as a reason he left Diggs off of his top-five cornerback rankings that were released in May.

Diggs didn't seem phased by not making the list.

“That’s his opinion,” Diggs said. “Bucky feels like I’m not one of the top five, that’s what it is. He said I wasn’t one of the top corners coming out of college, too. Now look.”

The Maryland native certainly has proven his worth since entering the NFL. Questioning whether or not Diggs is a top-five cornerback is fair considering the consistency of the guys around the league. However, his 14 career interceptions have come in his last 21 games, which is an outer-worldly pace for creating turnovers.

The former second-round pick has only played cornerback full-time since his sophomore year at Alabama in 2017. Cornerback is one of the harder positions to transition from college to the professional ranks. Although Diggs doesn't have the same experience that a lot of NFL players have at his position, his 11 interceptions last season were the most in the NFL. Also, it earned him a first-team All-Pro nod, meaning he was viewed as a top-two player at cornerback.

No matter how good any player performs, his mindset should be to work on his craft as if he's accomplished nothing, which will keep his competitive fire ablaze. Diggs has that type of mentality as he enters his third season.

“I’m just trying to stack success, keep grinding, working on the little things and focus on next season,” Diggs said. “Last season happened, but I’m on to next year.”

Diggs has become a great conversation piece depending on how a person judges the cornerback position. However, he has shown that his arrow is only pointing upward in terms of his ceiling, and considering how good he already is, quarterbacks need to think twice about testing Diggs regularly.
