One of the great things about college football is the interesting non-conference matchups that pop up from time to time.
In 2020, the Vols will travel to Norman, OK (for the second time in less than 10 years), to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Matchups like this are part of what makes college football one of the greatest sports on earth.
I'd love to see Tennessee involved with more of these matchups — especially in a home-and-home series (though there's a time and place for neutral site matchups).
Here are five non-conference games for the Vols that would be incredible to see.
Tennessee vs Texas
Tennessee and Texas have played three times before, but the two historic programs haven't met on the field since 1969. The Longhorns currently hold a 2-1 lead in the series.
This is one of the rare matchups where I wouldn't mind seeing a neutral field matchup between the two schools. Imagine a game between Tennessee and Texas in the Superdome in New Orleans. "The battle for the real UT" could be a tremendous way to kick off a season.
Tennessee vs Michigan
Tennessee and Michigan played back in 2002 in the Citrus Bowl (UT won), but I think it's time for another matchup between these two programs. Mostly because I'd love to see Jim Harbaugh and Jeremy Pruitt face off against each other. This would absolutely need to be a home-and-home series. Vol fans in the big house? That would be incredible.
Tennessee vs USC
The Vols have played the Trojans four times, but Tennessee has never been able to come away with a win. The two schools haven't met since 1981, so a matchup is long overdue. I could handle this being a neutral site one-time game, maybe in Dallas.
Tennessee vs Ohio State
Tennessee and Ohio State played in the 1996 Citrus Bowl (the Vols won 20-14). That's the only previous matchup between the two programs. A home and home series between the Vols and the Buckeyes would be a dream come true. Watching a sea of orange invade the horseshoe? That would be a sight to see. Conversely, I imagine there would be a litany of Ohio State fans who would make the trip to Knoxville.
Tennessee vs Wake Forest
This might seem like an odd matchup, but stay with me here. What would be better than Tennessee fans heading to Winston-Salem and absolutely taking over Wake Forest's 31,500 seat stadium in front of Demon Deacons athletic director John Currie (you know, the former Vols AD that led the disastrous coaching search in 2017, which led to his dismissal after nine months on the job). Jeremy Pruitt leading the Vols to a big win in front of Currie, with Phillip Fulmer looking on, would be some sweet revenge for Tennessee.
