When speaking to the media on Tuesday, Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel responded to the outcry from Titans fans, who are wanting the team to part ways with offensive coordinator Todd Downing.
Vrabel's response just confirmed what most have already known: The Titans are not looking to make any coaching changes at this time.
"We're just not gonna do that," Vrabel told the media. "That's not something that's going to happen right now. I've had confidence in our staff and confidence in the guys that we put out there"…"I appreciate everybody's opinion."
Sure, fans have every right to be upset at Todd Downing and the rest of the coaching staff. The Titans offense was pathetic in Buffalo and thus far, their play calling has left a lot to be desired.
The Titans' philosophy seems to be that because plays have worked in the past, they will continue to work in the future. Just one problem, the 2022 Titans do not have the same talent of team's in the past.
It is this philosophy that's behind the Titans calling 18 Derrick Henry run plays on first down and 10+ against the Giants. The same philosophy that had the Titans running a toss play to Henry against an admittedly "fast" Bills defense, without Taylor Lewan in the game.
This the NFL. You adapt or die. Thus far, the Titans are dying in 2022.
All that being said, Todd Downing is not going to be fired right now. That's just not a realistic expectation. It's been two (granted, very bad) games…
Vrabel's response should shock nobody. But if you've been clamoring for the "hard hitting" questions, there you go. I still think the Titans issues go far deeper than just their play-caller.
The Titans have already proven to be stuck in their ways on the field. Why would that change off the field? It's going to take a lot more the two losses in September for them to make staff changes.
