Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing had plenty of great things to say about rookie quarterback Malik Willis on Tuesday during the first day of mandatory minicamps.
Willis, the No. 86 overall pick by the Titans (third round) in the 2022 NFL Draft, was praised by Downing for the "great strides" he's made so far since being drafted in April.
"He's made great strides," said Downing. "Just from his ability to run the huddle and the line of scrimmage. He's grown every single day. He's gotten more and more comfortable every day. I really love where the chemistry of that (quarterback) room is. It's been fun to watch him grow each and every opportunity he gets out here on the grass."
It certainly sounds like Willis' NFL career is off to a solid start.
Titans fans, however, should hope that his strong start doesn't equate to major success as a rookie. If Willis sees the field in 2022 (in non-garbage time), it's bad news for Tennessee. That's because it either means that starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill has suffered an injury or he's performing poorly. Either scenario means trouble for the Titans.
The best-case scenario for Tennessee is that Tannehill has the best year of his career in 2022 and Willis continues to develop at a high level and can be counted on as the Titans' long-term answer at quarterback once Tannehill moves on.
